Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

We always welcome your questions. Here are some of the most common ones we hear from our patients. You can always give us a call if you don't see the answer you need here.

Other

We are an “out-of-network” office, which means we are not contracted with any specific insurance company; however, the majority of patients can still use their insurance benefits with us. In fact, many plans offer full coverage of cleanings, exams, and x-rays, so that patients do not have to pay for these services out of their pocket. We will work hard to understand your specific insurance plan and give you as accurate an estimate of your costs as your insurance company will allow.

We even help you file claims with your insurance, so you don’t have to worry about it. We will also send in all of the necessary documentation they request. To get started in checking your insurance benefits with us, you will just need your insurance card (some insurances also require a social security number). Please give us a call, and we will walk you through the process!

Choosing Vision Dental Mar Vista for your family’s dental care means that every decision you and Dr. Strandburg make, you make as a team without interference from dental insurance limitations that do not always have your dental health in mind.

Our dental team is solution-oriented and will help you fit your necessary and cosmetic dental care into your budget.

Insurance companies negotiate agreements with dentists to have a certain set of fees for dental procedures. The dentist will lower their fees for a given insurance company, and in exchange, the insurance company will advertise this dentist as an “in-network provider.” The patient gets the benefit of lower fees, and to use their insurance coverage (which usually covers procedures at 40 percent to 80 percent depending on which procedure).

Insurance companies will pay part of procedures when a patient visits a dentist “in their network.” What is less commonly known is that most insurance companies also have “out-of-network benefits.”

This means that if the patient visits a dentist NOT in the insurance’s network, the patient will still get insurance payment coverage on procedures. Thus, when a patient visits an out-of-network dental office, their dental procedures will still be paid for in part by their insurance company.

For the vast majority of cases, whether a patient visits an in-network dentist or out-of-network dentist, they will still have to pay a portion of the procedure. Patients who visit an out-of-network dentist, like our office, pay a small amount more.

Our office fees are based on the “UCR,” or usual and customary rate, for our zip code. Being out of network allows us to schedule more time with our patients and helps us provide the highest level of service.

Dental Cleanings, Gum Treatments, and Preventive Oral Health

Most of our patients elect to become long-term, established patients. To do this, we do a very thorough workup of each patient to establish a baseline, identify any areas of disease, and create a plan to help achieve and maintain lifetime oral health. The records we take include a full mouth series of digital x-rays, measurements of gum health (periodontal probing), a visual exam of teeth, and intraoral tissues to screen for oral cancer and other diseases.

Tooth and Gum Cleanings in Mar Vista

We also perform a tooth and gum cleaning (in the absence of advanced gum disease). This process takes approximately 90 minutes (after new patient forms have been completed), and we take our time to get to know you, your concerns, and your long-term goals.

Once the evaluation is complete, Dr. Chris Strandburg will sit down with you and let you know about anything that requires treatment. This is also a great opportunity for you to discuss your cosmetic dentistry goals for your smile. Our Los Angeles dental practice welcomes new patients of all ages. Our comprehensive approach to dentistry ensures that you look and feel your best in every interaction.

General Dentistry

A toothache can be alarming, especially since they seem to happen at the worst times. The middle of the night, in a work meeting, and even while traveling are common times for a toothache to go from a dull throb to searing pain.

Our Mar Vista Team is Here For Your Dental Emergencies

We offer examinations for a single area and will help you diagnose your urgent need or dental emergency. Dental pain is usually a sign of something serious going on with your tooth and should not be ignored. Please give us a call, and we will see you as quickly as we can.

Once you arrive, we will examine your area of concern and help you understand the reason for your pain and what needs to be done to resolve it. This usually requires a localized x-ray and visual exam. We will do everything we can to help you promptly, but cannot guarantee same-day treatment.

It’s important to remember that dental pain rarely goes away on its own and will often worsen with time. The sooner you contact our Los Angeles dental office with your dental emergency, the faster we can help you feel like yourself again.

Pediatric Dentistry

Yes! We see children from six months old to 15 years old and recommend that you make your child’s first dental appointment about the same time their teeth make their initial debut. Our Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Andrew Huynh, has specialized training in caring for early development and childhood diseases and aims to give your child the healthiest, happiest possible dental experience as they grow up.

Pediatric Dentistry in Mar Vista

Dr. Huynh partners with parents to create a “smile team” that supports your little one’s oral health and confidence. We will discuss your child's habits and nutrition, and how to take care of those little teeth at home. Parents play such an essential role in avoiding dental disease. In fact, your baby’s oral health starts during pregnancy when we look after the expecting mother and keep her teeth and gums healthy throughout.

If cavities do develop, you can count on our team to provide the gentlest dentistry designed just for your son or daughter.

Dr. Huynh did his Pediatric residency at Boston Children’s Hospital, which is Harvard University’s specialist program. We are proud he brings his experience with pediatric dentistry to our Mar Vista dental office. To learn more about children’s dentistry, click here.

Veneers

Living with smile imperfections might cause you to feel embarrassed when you meet other people or in social situations. A beautiful smile gives you confidence that helps you achieve your personal and professional goals, and dental veneers can help you redesaign your smile.

Since Dr. Strandburg removes a small amount of tooth enamel when bonding veneers, they are considered a permanent treatment.

Veneers consist of a thin layer of porcelain that fits over your natural tooth and covers problems like:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Stains or discoloration
  • Slight misalignment issues
  • Tooth size discrepancies

Porcelain veneers in Mar Vista allow you to completely change the size, shape, and shade of your teeth for a beautiful smile redesign.

If you are looking for a less permanent solution, Dr. Strandburg might recommed dental bonding. Using a material called composite resin that we use for dental fillings, your Mar Vista cosmetic dentist can eliminate a lot of the same imperfections that procelain veneers do.

Whatever makes you feel self-conscious about your smile, there are many cosmetic treatment options that can help you meet your goals. We invite you to contact Vision Dental Mar Vista today at (424)1234 to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Strandburg.
