Children's Preventative Dentistry in Mar Vista

At Vision Dental Mar Vista, our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Andrew Huynh, welcomes children from their very first dental visit. His experience and special ability to keep kids calm and engaged allows us to start looking after their smiles right from the start.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their initial dental visit by age one, or when their teeth begin to erupt. While this may seem early, studies show that excellent dental care in childhood leads to healthier smiles as an adult.

We begin with age-appropriate preventive dentistry. At the first visit, that may mean counting teeth, letting your child hold the toothbrush, a ride in the chair, and an exam with Dr. Andrew to determine that their growth and development is on track.

For kids who feel anxious, they can sit on mom or dad’s lap for their first appointment to give them added security.

Education for Parents

Early childhood dental visits are as much for the parents and the kids! Dr. Andrew will go over some of the basics of how you and your child’s caregivers can improve their oral health at home between dental visits.

The best way to help kids keep their teeth healthy is to brush and floss twice daily using a toothbrush designed for little mouths and feeding your little one a healthy diet.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet and nutrition play a large role in oral health for kids beginning even in the womb. Heathy nutrition for mom means healthy teeth for your little one. Avoiding sugary, processed, and acidic foods can reduce the risk of early childhood caries (cavities or decay). Limiting bottles to water at bedtime and avoiding snacking between meals all keep your child’s teeth healthy by maintaining a natural pH level in the mouth. Sugar and acid soften the enamel, particularly right after eating.

A well-balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins, and dairy can help your child enjoy a healthy body and a healthy smile.

Dental Visits

As your child grows, we will continue to customize their preventive treatments.

  • Dental exams
  • Cleanings
  • X-rays
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Teeth sealants
  • Orthodontic intervention
  • Behavior modification discussions (thumb sucking and pacifier use)

If a dental condition does arise, such as a cavity or broken tooth, naturally, we will treat your child with the same gentle care we want for our own kids.

Pediatric Dental Emergencies in the 90064 Area

Occasionally, an accident on the swing set or a fall while running could cause a dental emergency. We understand that this is traumatic for both kids and parents. We will treat your little one as soon as possible to relieve their pain and mom and dad’s emotional distress.

Common dental emergencies we treat include:

  • Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Dislodged or displaced tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Trauma due to play or sports

If baby teeth are knocked out or damaged, it is not as urgent that we treat the situation except to relieve pain and provide advice. When your child’s permanent teeth are injured, however, acting fast may mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

For a knocked-out tooth, touch the tooth as little as possible and either hold it in the socket or store it in a small container of milk and call our Los Angeles dental office right away to arrange an immediate emergency appointment.
